Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

A fair weather Chapter 36 meeting? In January? Well, okay, there was a little light rain, but not enough to keep 34 people from showing up and having a good time and good food!

In spite of my best attempt to shanghai someone else, it looks like you're stuck with Troy, KC9E, and me for another year as your chapter officers. I guess we can still hope for impeachment! :-) February begins our 5th year since reviving our chapter, and we haven't missed a month's eating-meeting yet. I hope all of you will continue to support our chapter and attend our meetings when you can. And please invite others to join with us too. Thanks!

I was very happy to welcome "new-new" ham, Chad KC9WSO (my coworker at ArcelorMittal) and "new-old" ham, Jurgen N9RD, who both joined us for the first time this evening. I hope both of you guys will come back often! Welcome also to new Chapter 36 Member Paul KB9AVO from Syracuse. Paul didn't make it to this meeting, but maybe one of these times he will.

Jurgen N9RD and Tom W8FIB provided some interesting show and tell items for us. Tom brought a mini-collection of antique keys, bugs, sounders, headsets, and (gasp!) even a microphone! Jurgen is also a strong CW man, and he brought a Signal Learner practice set... a manual key and sounder made by Signal Electric of Menominee, MI around 1939. The link shows one similar to Jurgen's, and there is also a much better picture of the diagram on the underside of the base than my photo below.

Remember that the QCWA Journal is now a monthly publication. The first month's edition, January 2013, was put online the day of our meeting. I expect that most of you are getting an email to remind you when it is posted to the QCWA website. You have to log in with your call sign and a password to access the Journal in their Members Only section at http://www.qcwa.org/members/login.php. Contact Headquarters if you do not yet have a password to access this site.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of our first active Chapter 36'er, Carl Konefsky, W9TAD. Carl attended our first reorganizational meeting during the blizzard of Feb. 2009. He was not yet eligible to join the QCWA at that time. Though he wasn't always a regular at our dinners, he did attend when he could, including 5 meetings in 2011 before his health started to deteriorate. The photo above is from July 2011 and is one of the best ones I have of him. Carl was a career car salesman and the consumate wheeler-dealer. He had a charisma and leadership ability that few can match. He was born August 13, 1934 and died December 30, 2012, age 78. His obituary can be read here. We will miss you, Carl.    ...-.-
