Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

A great crowd of 29 people came out for our first meeting of 2012, and our second time at the Dynasty. The food and service was very good, and it seems to be well liked among our group. Buffet dinners are one of the best options for us since folks can eat whenever they're ready and not have long delays after ordering from a menu. And there is no lack if you're hungry!

This meeting was our annual election also. Did anyone else see an election? I tried hard to get some others (must be QCWA full member) to step up and take over, but it seems that Troy and I were re-elected for another year by acclamation (or default!). We will do our best!

We had some interesting items for show-and-tell. Gary, WA6UOO, brought a collection of his early Novice contact QSL's. Novices were commonly issued WN and KN call signs, but many during Gary's era received WV prefixes instead. Gary's own call was WV6UOO before he upgraded and received WA6UOO.

Carl, W9CJH, brought some photos of a Kenwood TS-850SAT that he is working on. There were several damaged areas inside, and Carl thinks it was probably hit by lightning. A major problem working on these older rigs is getting suitable parts, showing an example of an IC replacement. Carl also showed a non-inductive 50 ohm resister rated for 80 watts, an excellent dummy load!

Stan, W4SV, brought an old photo to explain why his chin whiskers are getting longer, and to amuse some of the geneologists among you. The old-time picture below is Stan's great-great-grandfather, William Henry Vandiver (1848-1914). He went by his middle name, which is very common down south. A piece of Henry's farm was set aside as a family cemetery and he was the first person buried there. The cemetery has kept the family name and is known as Vandiver Hollow Cemetery, adjacent to Vandiver Hollow Baptist Church.
