Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

We had 26 members and guests come out for a great time at the Dynasty Buffet in Valpo for our October meeting. We had been going to Suzie's Cafe lately when our meetings rotate into Porter County, but they have discontinued their Friday buffet dinners for the winter season. I'm not complaining... I love Chinese food, and it was good to get back to the Dynasty!

Our primary task of the evening was to distribute the two prizes that were won by Dennis, K9JZZ, in our Membership Drive Contest that ended in August. Dennis donated his prizes back to us to be reused in another contest. I had given some warning that this would be a surprise contest without any other details to help prepare. And the topic was: QCWA Facts. I had about a dozen possible trivia questions to ask, but it only took a few minutes and our Starke County members cleaned up on both prizes! Doc Lochner, K9CIV, was first and correctly answered 1947 for "When was the QCWA was founded?" Doc had the choice of prizes and took the QCWA mousepad. John Poindexter, W3ML, won the 2011 ARRL Periodicals-on-CDROM (QST-NCJ-QEX) with the correct answer of Barry Goldwater for "What U.S. Senator is a past president of the QCWA?" Thanks to all for playing, and congratulations to tonights winners!

Doc, K9CIV, also brought us our only show-and-tell for the evening. He brought a poster (and QSL) from the Peter I Island DXpedition 3YØX to Antarctica in 2006. But also included with the framed poster were a couple of First Day Cover stamps from the Australian Antarctic Territory, circa 1957, and a couple of other QSL's from way down under. Very cool stuff... thanks Doc!
