Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

Our special Old Time Radio Show, hosted by Andy W9FXT and his wife Pat N9FXT, went very well at the Valparaiso Library. Many thanks to Andy and Pat for all their effort to put on this very nice program. Many thanks also to Bruce W9OTN and Tom W8FIB for bringing their special show-and-tell items. We had 23 members and guests attend our first-ever special program like this, and everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoy the program and the show-and-tell.

Andy's program was very informative with much discussion about the Golden Days of Radio (and early TV). Andy's wife Pat had computer control that piped many short audio clips through a 1938 Crosley console while Andy asked many trivia questions. Given the old-timer nature of our group, his questions were very well answered. Here are a few samples of the questions: What radio personality had a sandwich named after him? Baby Snooks was portrayed by what actress? Who was the cowboy that was known as "Robin Hood of the Old West? Andy has a short video on his website that highlights a number of Old Time Radio clips and displays some of his interesting collection of radios and other antiques... check it out here.

I don't think we could have a meeting on the topic of broadcast radio without at least some discussion of one of our own northwest Indiana legends, Jean Shepherd, W9QWN/K2ORS (1921-1999). Jean was a popular radio personality and the author/narrator of the 1983 classic TV program, A Christmas Story that portrayed his life growing up in Hammond. Through our discussion we know that many of our members lived that same experience too. Shep graduated from Hammond High School in 1939, and he talks about getting his Class A ham license back in those days on WOR Radio here: Part 1 and Part 2.

Thanks to Levi WB9CAO for bringing some delicious doughnuts and providing a thank-you gift for Andy. Thanks to Bruce W9OTN for supplying the coffee. Thanks to Dave W9DN for supplying the coffee pot and amenities. And thanks to everyone who came out for this special meeting! See photos and videos below!

Videos!

These are not "streaming videos" so you'll have to right-click on file name and choose "Save as" or "Save link as" to save the video to your computer. They are in MP4 format and should work on just about all computers. The videos are greatly reduced from the original, but the Old Time Radio Show is still fairly large and needs high speed Internet to download. If anyone wants a better quality copy, let me know and I'll put them on DVD for you.
