Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

We went from one of our lightest turnouts ever last month (11 people) to one of our heaviest in quite a long time. We had 34 members and guests join us from as far away as Fort Wayne and Texas this month, and one who just returned from Germany. WOW! What a difference a month can make sometimes! The food was delicious and we filled the whole corner that the Dynasty folks set aside for us. I think that everyone had a very good time, and I'm glad that I remembered my camera this time too. You all made some very nice photos (see below).

We had a couple of show and tell items this month as well. Tom, W8FIB, brought a collectors item that he acquired on eBay. It was a telegraph sounder converted to a desk pen holder. It also had an engraved plate that said, PART OF NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. LOCAL TEST DESK INSTALLED JUNE 1941 ~ REMOVED SEPT. 7, 1985 BY AT&T INSTALLERS AND NY TEL ENGINEERS. Carl, K9LA, brought a Globe Matcher Jr, Model AT-3, made by WRL Electronics. This antenna tuner used an L-network to tune 10-80 meters with up to 100 watts of transmitter power. These were sold in kit form for $11.95 back in 1957, or $15.95 wired. Thanks to both of you for bringing in these neat antiques!

A roll call was taken so see how many of our members managed to get the Worked W1AW in All States Award during the W1AW Portable operation this year. Our quick tally was five: K9CIV, N9RD (also W1AW/9 op), K9LA, AE9YL, and W8FIB. Congratulations to all of you! Thanks also to those of our members also served as W1AW/9 operators in Indiana for helping to make this program a success. If anyone else worked W1AW in all 50 states during this event, send an email to , and I'll add you to this list also.

UPDATED: Allen W9DZ and Jeff KC9TEW also worked W1AW in all 50 states and both were also W1AW/9 control operators.
