Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

A little lighter turnout this month (20)... no doubt due to everyone being so busy preparing for the holidays. But it was a fun time and excellent meal. The Golden Corral never lets us down. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I'm sure that 2012 will be another great year for us!

Thanks to Bruce, W9OTN, for his very informative talk on recognizing strokes. As we all get older, the ability to quickly detect the signs of a stroke could very easily save your life, or a loved one. Quick treatment can also greatly increase your chance for a full recovery. Much of Bruce's talk came from this PDF file, and you might want to share it with your family and friends. The basic summary is to remember the first three letters of the word stroke, S - T - R.

S - Smile : Ask the person to smile. Strokes often leave facial paralysis on one side. A simple smile should show both corners of the mouth upturned. If one side does not turn up, or droops down, this is noticeable.

T - Talk : Ask the person to speak a simple sentence, such as "It is sunny out today." Speech should be clear and coherent. (Don't confuse with someone who is drunk.)

R - Raise both arms : Ask the person to raise both of their arms up. The paralysis from a stroke usually affects just one side of the body, so the inability to raise just one arm is a good indicator.

Bonus item - Stick out tongue : Ask the person to stick their tongue straight out. If it is crooked or goes to one side instead of straight, this is another sign of stroke.

If you suspect someone has suffered a stroke, call 911 immediately and get help!

With much in the recent news about executive proclamations, I thought, "Hey, I can do that too!" So, therefore, by the power vested in me as President of Chapter 36, I have hereby created a new award for our chapter, The Thirty-Sixer! And the first recipient of this award was none other than Bruce Balsley, W9OTN, in appreciation for his dedication to our chapter and for his outstanding contributions to our show and tell programs. Bruce has been the most active of all of us in bringing very interesting items to our programs, and we all appreciate it very much!
