Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

We had a rather light turnout of only 15 members and guests at our December meeting, but everyone had a good time and enjoyed the special contest we arranged for this month. Special thanks to Pam (Bruce W9OTN's wife) for providing the idea and much of the quiz material for the contest.

And that contest was a trivia game about the movie and TV classic, A Christmas Story, co-written and narrated by Jean Shepherd, and based on his book titled, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. I think everyone was already aware that Jean was a local ham (W9QWN, later K2ORS) who became a popular radio personality on WOR-AM in New York for 21 years. Shep's storytelling abilities were often compared to Mark Twain. Want to know more about Jean Shepherd? Let me Google that for you.

While everyone at the meeting had seen A Christmas Story at least once, answering 25 trivia questions proved much more difficult. At the end, John W9ZG, answered four questions correctly to win a 2014 100-Year Anniversary Edition of the ARRL Handbook. Honorable mentions also go to Tom W8FIB, Mike WU9D, and Troy KC9E who all guessed at least one question correctly. Even though the contest was harder than expected, everyone had a good time playing along and recalling the various movie scenes. Click here to see the full game list of 30 questions (5 extra in case a tie-breaker was needed). And if that isn't enough, you can click here to see an even bigger list of about 80 questions. This bigger list also includes the full cast of characters at the end.

( Don't forget! )

You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

We also had an auction for a brand new ARRL Extra Class License Manual in hopes of encouraging someone in our group to upgrade to that top rung of our licensing ladder. We were happy to see Reneta (Renee) Banaszak, W9MDF, win this auction! And we hope to see her follow through soon and pass the Extra Class exam! Good Luck Renee!

Thanks to Dale Dickinson, WB1FMW, who provided both the ARRL Handbook and the License Manual to be used as prizes.
