Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

Although the weather was cold and spitting some of the first snow we've seen this year, we still had a very good turnout (22 people) for our December meeting at Old Country Buffet in Merrillville. We were very glad to have John NG9B visit with us again, and also Gus K9CA joined us for the first time. Most reports of the food were good, but unfortunately not all. So we will keep looking at new places as we go along next year, and revisit some of those that have been favorites.

The December contest was for the oldest D-104 microphone. The early models had serial numbers which helps to date them, and there were a couple in close running. But Bruce W9OTN was declared the winner with his 1934 model, serial #11496, from the first year they were made by the Astatic Corporation. Bruce picked up this mic (in excellent condition) from a well known area ham, Roy Hulvey, W9PLW (SK), at the Lake County Hamfest. Roy had bought the mic new and it was well kept and cared for, even keeping the original cloth dust cover which can be seen in the photos (laying on the table behind the mic). If you knew Roy, I don't think you're surprised! Dan W9DWS was a close contender with a D-104 that was just slightly newer, later in 1934 or maybe 1935. Dan also brought the mic with the "ring & spring" mount, popular in broadcasting. Other D-104's were brought by Carl W9CJH and John W9ZG. Thanks to all of you for showing us your stuff!
