Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

The snow held off, but it was still very chilly for our final meeting of 2010. We had 17 people join us at the Old Country Buffet where the temperature inside was equally hard to control. The room started off too warm, and by the end of the evening quite a few were wearing their coats. But I hope that everyone got their fill from the buffet!

Bruce, W9OTN, was our only contributor to the show-and-tell, but it sure was an interesting item that he presented (see pictures below). It was an table centerpiece ashtray from the ARRL National Convention held in Milwaukee September 4-6, 1948. The ashtray is made with a replica of the infamous Wouff Hong first discovered by The Old Man (Hiram Percy Maxim). Bruce gave us a nice overview of the history of this interesting bit of ham radio's past. And by strange coincidence, there are TWO of these fine antiques within our chapter membership! Besides Bruce, Danny W9DWS, also has one just like it! Thanks Bruce for the excellent presentation!

The Wouff Hong and Rettysnitch were first mentioned in QST in 1917, and the first pictures were shown in 1919. You can read a little of the ARRL history of the Wouff Hong here. You can see a photo of the original, kept under glass at ARRL HQ here. A little more info on the Wouff Hong, and it's companion, the Rettysnitch can be found here. Want to show your support for the principles of law, order and decency in amateur radio? You can proudly wear a Wouff Hong pin, availabe from the ARRL. Single pins available for $5 each here or you can buy a set of 25 for only $40 here.

January is our election! Want to be an officer? Let us know!
