Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

Another great crowd (22 people) showed up for our Friday breakfast at the casino. All had a good time and a delicious breakfast. We might have had even more except for the threat of snow/ice on the roads that morning. Although the weekday morning is limiting for some, we may get back and try this again sometime, if the casino keeps their special price on Fridays.

If you've ever heard what sounds like a gunshot in your ham shack, it might have been due to a blown capacitor. Thanks to Bruce, W9OTN, who brought a fine example of what that catastrophic failure looks like after the smoke clears. See photo below.

Stan, W4SV, had something to tell this month, with something to show for it coming at a later date. And that report is that he used one of our Chapter 36 club call signs, W9EGQ (Herb Brier's call), on a packet radio setup and made a two-way contact with the International Space Station. The date was Tuesday, Feb. 21st, and he bounced packets off of the ISS digipeater on two passes, at about 3:27pm and 5:00pm local time, using 145.825 MHz simplex. The packet call sign on the ISS is a Russian call, RSØISS-4. A QSL card has been requested and will be brought to a future meeting to show everyone. They send a very nice QSL card.

Last month Stan also brought an old photo of his great-great-grandfather Henry, explaining that he was thinking of growing his chin whiskers that long too, if he could. Well, he couldn't! At least, he doesn't have the patience for it right now. And then there was the nasty snow blower accident... you can see the mangled mess below, with some comparison photos as a reminder. ;-)

Next month is back in Lake County. Come out and join us as we honor another of our members, Tom W8FIB, with his 50-Year Anniversary Award! Details on date/location soon.

P.S. Just kidding about the snow blower accident. And THANKS! for all the compliments on the recent rediscovery of my real chin. I actually do shave it off once in awhile, but it has been quite a long time this time, and many (or most) of you have never seen me clean shaven before. Don't worry, it won't last long!
