Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

We had a number of show and tell items at our March meeting that were enjoyed by 23 members and guests. And we welcomed one new full member to our ranks, Bob, KA9AQZ. Bob brought us a nice example of "large and small" in the 2m amateur handi-talkie department. Large was an old Midland crystal controlled HT from bygone years. A "brick" they used to call these things, with obvious reasons. Small was an Alinco shirt pocket radio, not much bigger than a credit card. (See photos below.)

Bruce, W9OTN, showed the stop-action ability of a fast strobe light. He imprinted his wife's name, Pam, on three of the blades of a small muffin fan that would spin at about 3200 rpm. The adjustable speed of the strobe light was tweaked to match the rotation of the fan allowing us to read Pam's name as if the fan were not moving at all. Bruce and Pam also brought an interesting news clipping from Senior Life Newspaper by Feature Writer Amy Wenger about a neighboring club, the Michiana Amateur Radio Club (MARC). Unfortunately, I neglected to pass around the article during our dinner meeting, so I scanned it and have included it below. You can also see the full article online here.

Mike, WU9D, brought a very well-done construction project of a quadrifilar helix antenna. The design used PVC pipe for support and small copper tubing for the elements cut for the 440 MHz band. Mike lives in an apartment but that doesn't seem to slow down his operating. The quadrifilar helix performs well for satellite reception, and Mike is also very active on HF as well. If you want more details about building a quadrifilar helix yourself, let me Google that for you.

Thanks to everyone for bringing in these great show and tell items!

Special thanks also to Ed, K9TZT, who donated a pair of brand new RCA 866-A rectifier tubes to auction as a chapter fundraiser. James, KC9KTV, scooped them up quickly for a very good price.
