Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

We all had a great time at the Golden Corral for our March meeting, with 21 members and guests in attendance. One of the highlights of the evening was handing out awards, one of which was expected, and one that was a surprise. It was planned to give Ron Banaszak, W9FB, his 60-Year Anniversary Award, but Ron had other plans. With the help of his computer-whiz granddaughter, Ron also made a special award for me in appreciation for reactivating our chapter and renewing his interest in QCWA. Ron is a past President of Chapter 36 himself, and I am grateful for his kindness and glad to have him back attending our meetings when he can. And again, congratulations Ron on achieving your 60-Year milestone!

Tom Ruggles, W8FIB, brought several items for show-and-tell for us. An avid Morse operator and DX'er, Tom has quite a collection of keys and tonight he showed off a beautiful example of the McElroy vintage. Jumping from the past to the present, he also showed us his Signal Link USB interface which helps him get active on digital modes like PSK31, and JT65. Another high-tech item Tom brought is a QSL card scanning system from DX Engineering. After feeding the QSL card through the digital scanner, the image is transferred to a digital picture viewer (7-inch diagonal, about the size of a tablet computer). QSL's (and photos) can then cycle through in an endless slideshow and look great on the screen. The Signal Link USB and DX Engineering scanner each cost in the neighborhood of $100, and both would make a great station accessory. Tom didn't say, but McElroy keys might cost a bit more!

Ed Perosky, K9TZT, donated a $25 gift certificate from Wolf River Coils to be auctioned at our meeting, and Rich Lochner, K9CIV, won the auction for $10. Thanks to both of you for helping to bump up our treasury.
