Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

A good turnout for our July meeting (29 people) at Gelsosomo's Pizza, and I think a good time was had by all. Perhaps we've hit our peak for attendance now since June and July were down somewhat, or maybe its just all the summer activities. But I am still well pleased with our turnout... I think that having close to 30 (or more) is a great showing on a monthly basis. (And especially with the crazy way that I move the meeting dates and locations around!)

Last month's contest was the oldest penny, and this month it was the oldest paper money (either U.S. or C.S.A. accepted). Congratulations to Gene, W9CWG, for winning this one! Gene actually got both 1st and 2nd place! His winner was an 1864 Confederate States of America $10 note, and his 2nd place was a 1914 U.S. $1 bill that says, National Currency on the face of the bill. I've never seen these old types of currency in person before and they were really great entries for our contest. I supplied a 1935 $1 Silver Certificate too, but I didn't think I had a chance with this crowd of collectors! If Bruce, W9OTN, had read the email about this contest, maybe he could have given Gene a run for his money (ooh, a pun!)... but I guess we will never know. I didn't take any pictures or get scans of the real bills, but thanks to the Internet, below are some samples similar to what we had for the contest.

Here are the pics:
