Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

Another light turnout this month, 20 people, but still a great time with good food and fellowship. And 20 is still a very good turnout, really. It was suggested to me recently that maybe we should suspend meetings through the summer due to so many activities keeping folks busy. It was decided that we should continue with the monthly meetings as we have been. Everyone enjoys coming out and sharing a meal together, even if they can't make it every time.

Bruce, W9OTN, brought a beautiful show-and-tell piece for us to admire! It was a U.S. Navy antenna coupler (tuner), Model RF-302, manufactured by RF Communications, Inc. in probably the early 1950's. The manual is stamped with the serial number matching that on the coupler, so both are the originally produced items. Perhaps most impressive of all was the condition... which can only be described as pristine! It looks new out of the box and doesn't look as if it has ever had any RF put through it. Thanks Bruce for another excellent showpiece!

Stan, W4SV, brought a sample of big and small: big as in 4 gigabytes; small as in a tiny USB thumb drive package. These were on sale at Staples for only $10 each, and Stan picked up several. One had to be replaced already... too small, and easily lost! But isn't it great how technology keeps making our toys smaller and smaller, as well as cheaper and cheaper (well, some things anyway).
