Chapter 36 - Northwest Indiana

~ Creaky Knees and Rusty Keys ~

It was amazing... it didn't rain on our August meeting! And it didn't snow either! And we had a great turnout of 28 members and guests for a delicious dinner at Hacienda for the conclusion of our Membership Drive Contest.

Although the awarding of prizes isn't until our September meeting (or they will be mailed), we are still able to declare the winners. In 1st Place: Don Smith WA9KRT, in 2nd Place: Dennis Gilbey K9JZZ, and in 3rd Place: Carlos Santini KA9JYO. Congratulations guys! And thanks to everyone who participated in the contest! We signed up 5 brand new members in the 6-month contest period and had about a dozen renewals. Full details are on the Contest Page.

We didn't have much for show-and-tell this month. Tom, W8FIB, had a family photo that he was showing off, but I didn't get a copy of it to post here. And I passed around another example of relative size, showing how big things are in the steel mill. You might remember my photo from our June meeting that showed a car parked under a large piece of mobile equipment. The photo below shows me standing in front of Stonehenge in England, me standing in front of an iron ladle in the mill (it holds about 600,000 lbs of molten iron), and me standing at one end of my Cape Cod style house. Which is bigger? To tell you the truth, I don't really know myself for sure. But I think they are in order, with my house about 22-24 ft. tall, the iron ladle about 20-22 ft tall to the tip of the spout, and Stonehenge about 18-20 ft tall. But it's obviously close between all of them judging by the photos. And you can tell that I don't get taller... only wider!

Sorry, no people pictures this month. I took some, but they were all bad. Really bad.
My fault... maybe I shouldn't have beer at these dinners!
